The Lorenzo E. Patiño Hall of Justice was completed in April 1989. After four years of construction, the new jail tripled the bed space from the previous facility. More recently, the cells were double-bunked and now have the capacity to house 2,432 inmates.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department - external link operates the Main Jail and has 395 staff managing the facility. The jail houses in-custody defendants and four courtrooms to handle the felony caseload.
